The Noolands
The Noolands are a Rock & Roll band that writes and records music for their best friends. Formed in 2014 in the city of Barrie, the band came together during a series of jam sessions with their friend Julian at the Spaulding School of the Arts. Brandon Davenport and twins, James Laxton and Jon Laxton, immediately decided to form a rock & roll group as they saw a need for it in their city.

Brandon suggested they call it “The Noolands”, after his grandparent’s family name. The name is normally spelled “Newland” but the spelling was changed for the band so people would pronounce it properly. According to Brandon “the family just spelled their name wrong is all”.

After forming the group and recording their first acoustic single entitled “End of the Road” in their friend Rob’s living room, they made it official and announced the band’s formation online. With the excitement building the pressure growing to record another single, Brandon, James and Jon were forced to rethink the group. A new funk-rock song was written called “High School T-Shirt” in the following weeks, but with Brandon singing lead vocals, they had to find someone to play drums for the track.

After asking a few people if they’d like to record drums for “High School T-Shirt”, they bumped into their good friend and local talent Aaron Casey downtown Barrie one night. Always penned as a frontman, Aaron was excited at the chance to record some drums. After a few rehearsals the track was solidified and Saxophone player Maghan Poole was added to the arrangement.

Longtime friend and collaborator Joshua Doerksen offered to record the track at Unity Market Cafe & Studios in October and “High Shool T-Shirt” was recorded live and released that month. The credibility the track brought to the band immediately made Aaron a permanent member and moving forward it was finally decided who “The Noolands” were.

Momentum had started to pick up and The Noolands discovered their unique ability to write music at a rapid pace, with each member bringing their strengths to the table. It is these early songwriting moments that the band decided to break the conventions of the 4 piece rock outfit. Instead of assigning roles to the members, the band allows themselves to play different instruments for different tracks. The reaction it gets from the crowd is a major factor as to why they decided to keep things loose.

Although the band's beginning has been fantastic and has led to more releases, electric shows and a growing fan base, the future is un-decided for The Noolands. They continue to focus on writing compelling music for their fans and finding interesting ways to showcase it. There's no telling what The Noolands will get up to next. They are currently recording new material with Shane Heath.
